A social relationship and life course perspective directs attention to both benefits and costs of a sexual relationship for health (Umberson and Montez 2010), and suggests that the processes differ for men and women (Fuhrera and Stansfeld 2002). We conceptualize partnered sex within a social relationship framework and argue that partnered sex shapes individuals’ life context over time and in turn evokes cardiovascular response.
